NEW YORK, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Dennis deLeon, president of the Latino Commission on AIDS, announced today the musical line up that will play for Cielo Latino on May 12, 2009, at Cipriani Wall Street. The Latino Commission on AIDS is delighted to have Jorge Villamizar, formerly of Bacilos, and Yerbabuena as the headlining performers for Cielo Latino.
Colombian born Villamizar comes from a musically inclined family, so it was no surprise when he formed the Latin Grammy Award winning group Bacilos. Recently, he joined British producer Richard Blair and recorded his first solo album at home in Miami and Bogota. His long-awaited album, named Jorge Villamizar, was released on May 20, 2008, and is currently on tour.
"I couldn't be more proud to perform for such a great cause," said Villamizar. "People need to know about this disease, they need to know how it affects everyone in our community. The Latino Commission on AIDS is getting the word out on prevention and I want to lend my voice in the fight against HIV/AIDS."
Yerbabuena is a group of individuals who come together to play the music that they love under the musical direction of singer-composer-musician Tato Torres. It is composed of musicians, singers and dancers from the New York City area who share an intense passion for the musical traditions of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
"We are happy to support the Latino Commission on AIDS," said Flaco Navaja of Yerbabuena. "Latinos don't go down without a fight and that is what we are here to do. We need to keep fighting for a cure for HIV/AIDS, but most of all we need prevention."
The evening will also feature the flamenco sounds of Latin Grammy Award Winning guitarist Hernan Romero, who draws inspiration from the Flamenco music experienced while living in Cadiz, Spain.
Also present will be DJ D'marquesina spinning during the cocktail hour preceding dinner and the awards ceremony.
These entertainers follow in the footsteps of previous Cielo Latino entertainers such as Cucu Diamantes, India - the Reigning Queen of Salsa, Johnny Pacheco, Jean and many others. The Latino Commission on AIDS is a national nonprofit membership organization dedicated to fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Latino community. In response to the critical, unmet need for HIV prevention and care for Latinos, a coalition of Latino leaders founded the agency in 1990.
